Ring chromosome 18 in a patient with multiple anomalies.

چکیده
Ring chromosomes, long of interest in cytogenetics, have been intensively studied in corn and Drosophila (McClintock, 1932, 1938; Morgan, 1933; Battacharya, 1950) and also described in Crepis, Tulipa, Tradescantia, and other species. In the past few years, a number of reports of ring chromosomes in man have appeared (Table I). We recently encountered a mentally retarded patient with multiple congenital anomalies, in a high proportion of whose cells we found a ring chromosome 18. The clinical expression of patients with 18 long (Lejeune, Berger, Lafourcade, and Rethore, 1966) and short arm deletions (Grouchy, Bonnette, and Salmon, 1966) are contrasted and compared with the findings in our patient and other patients with ring 18 chromosomes. The variability in size and frequency of ring chromosomes in human subjects and in this patient are discussed.

Ring Chromosome 18: A Case Report
Ring chromosomes are rare chromosomal disorders that usually appear to occur de novo. A ring chromosome forms when due to deletion both ends of chromosome fuse with each other. Depending on the amount of chromosomal deletion, the clinical manifestations may be different. So, ring 18 syndrome is characterized by severe mental growth retardation as well as microcephaly, brain and ocular malformat...

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a hereditary autosomal dominant cancer syndrome, results from germ line mutation or deletion of the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) gene on chromosome 5q21. Patients with FAP suffer from multiple polyps mainly at the colorectal region as well as other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, which has propensity to transform into carcinoma. FAP has also...

A 39 year old male with multiple dysmorphic features was found to have an unstable ring chromosome 7. Clinical findings are presented and compared with the other five reported cases of ring chromosome 7. The main characteristics found in patients with this chromosome constitution are prenatal onset growth deficiency, bone anomalies, pigmentary or vascular skin changes, and ocular and genital an...
متن کاملMosaic and partial monosomy of chromosome 21 in a case with low platelets count
Background Monosomy is defined as the presence of only one chromosome instead of two in humans. Partial monosomy occurs when only a portion of the chromosome is present in a single copy, while the rest has two copies. It can occur in unbalanced translocations or deletions. Case report In this report, a 6 years old girl was presented who was referred to the Pediatric Dep, Shahid Sadoughi Ho...
متن کاملRing chromosome 18 abnormality in acute myelogenous leukemia: the clinical dilemma
The ring chromosome is a circular, structural abnormality composed of either multiple chromosomes or a single chromosome with loss of genetic material at one or both ends. This chromosomal rearrangement is often unstable with frequent recombinations and may be accompanied by either loss or amplification of genetic material[1]. Considering that ring chromosomes are rare in acute myelogenous leuk...
